How many units does a 1 HP water pump use per hour?

Short answer: 1 HP equals 746 W of output, but a 1 HP pump draws about 0.9–1.1 kW from the supply because of motor losses, so it uses roughly 1 unit (kWh) per hour. Running 1 hour a day, that is about 30 kWh a month, around ₹240 at ₹8/kWh in India, or about $5.49 at the US average of 18.3¢/kWh.

Pump consumption
Pump ratingInput powerkWh per hourkWh/month at 1 h/day
0.5 HP0.5–0.6 kW0.5–0.615–18
1 HP0.9–1.1 kW0.9–1.127–33
1.5 HP1.3–1.6 kW1.3–1.639–48
2 HP1.7–2.1 kW1.7–2.151–63

Tip: A float switch or automatic controller prevents overflow and dry running, which often wastes 10–30% of pump energy.

Using this calculator outside India? Outside India? Pick your currency at the top of the page and enter the per-kWh rate printed on your bill. Typical residential averages: USA 18.3¢/kWh (EIA, July 2026; California 33.6¢, Texas 15.9¢), UK about £0.25/kWh, Germany about €0.38/kWh, UAE about AED 0.23–0.38/kWh, Canada about C$0.13–0.20/kWh and Australia about A$0.30–0.35/kWh. The kWh result is the same in every country; only the cost changes.

How to use this result

Use this page to estimate water pump cost from HP and runtime. Actual usage depends on pump efficiency, head and tank overflow.

This is a preliminary planning estimate. For certified audits, use site measurement and nameplate readings.

FAQ

1 HP is equal to how many watts?
1 horsepower (mechanical HP) = 745.7 watts, usually rounded to 746 W. Metric horsepower is 735.5 W. Pump motors draw more than this from the supply because of motor losses.
How do I convert HP to kWh?
Multiply HP by 0.746 to get output kW, then divide by the motor efficiency (about 0.7–0.85 for small pumps) to get input kW. Multiply by hours of running to get kWh.
Is this result exact?
It is an engineering estimate using user inputs. Exact result needs actual meter/nameplate data.
Can I use it for audit report?
Yes, as a preliminary calculation and supporting estimate.

Pump saving tip

Overflowing tanks and leakages waste both water and electricity. Fix controls and pipes before buying a new pump.

Accuracy note

The result is a planning estimate. Use nameplate wattage, measured runtime and current tariff for professional-level accuracy.
