How much electricity do LED lights save?
Short answer: An LED uses about 80–85% less power than an incandescent bulb and about 50% less than a fluorescent tube for the same light. Replacing a 60 W bulb with a 9 W LED used 6 hours a day saves about 9 kWh a month per bulb, so the LED pays back within a few months.
| Old light → LED | Watts saved | kWh saved/month |
|---|---|---|
| 60 W incandescent → 9 W LED | 51 W | 9.2 |
| 40 W tube light (+choke) → 20 W LED tube | ~30 W | 5.4 |
| 15 W CFL → 9 W LED | 6 W | 1.1 |
| 100 W halogen flood → 20 W LED | 80 W | 14.4 |
Tip: Compare bulbs by lumens, not watts: about 800 lumens replaces an old 60 W bulb.
