How many units of electricity does a fridge use per day?
Short answer: A single-door fridge (180–200 L) uses about 0.5–0.8 units a day, a double-door frost-free fridge (250–350 L) about 0.9–1.3 units a day, and a large side-by-side about 1.5–2.2 units a day. That is roughly 15–65 kWh per month depending on size, age and star rating.

Tip: The yearly kWh printed on the energy label (BEE star label in India, Energy Guide in the US, EU label in Europe) is the most accurate number to use.
Using this calculator outside India? Outside India? Pick your currency at the top of the page and enter the per-kWh rate printed on your bill. Typical residential averages: USA 18.3¢/kWh (EIA, July 2026; California 33.6¢, Texas 15.9¢), UK about £0.25/kWh, Germany about €0.38/kWh, UAE about AED 0.23–0.38/kWh, Canada about C$0.13–0.20/kWh and Australia about A$0.30–0.35/kWh. The kWh result is the same in every country; only the cost changes.
By Harshad Kumar Sharma · Last reviewed · Method: kWh = watts × hours × days ÷ 1,000
Monthly units = duty-cycle adjusted average watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1000. Fridges do not draw full compressor watts continuously.
This is a preliminary planning estimate. For certified audits, use site measurement and nameplate readings.
FAQ
How much power does a 3 star fridge consume?
A typical 3-star double-door fridge (240–300 L) is labelled at roughly 250–320 kWh a year, about 21–27 units a month. A 5-star model of the same size is usually around 200 kWh a year, so it saves roughly 8–10 units a month. The exact figure is printed on the BEE star label.
How much electricity does a mini fridge use?
Most mini (compact) fridges are rated at roughly 150–300 kWh a year on their EnergyGuide or energy label, about 0.4–0.8 kWh a day. That is about 2–5 dollars a month at the US average of 18.3¢/kWh.
How much electricity does a fridge use in a year?
Most modern fridges use 200–500 kWh a year. Check the energy label: in India the BEE star label, in the US the Energy Guide label, and in Europe the EU energy label all print the annual kWh.
Why are fridge watts lower than nameplate?
The compressor cycles on/off, so average duty-cycle watts are used.
When should I replace an old fridge?
Only when saving and payback are reasonable or the fridge is very old/inefficient.
Before replacing a refrigerator
Check gasket, coil cleaning, door opening habits and age. Old refrigerators may justify replacement when monthly saving and reliability both matter.
Accuracy note
The result is a planning estimate. Use nameplate wattage, measured runtime and current tariff for professional-level accuracy.
