How much electricity does a room heater use?
Short answer: A room heater uses about 1 unit (kWh) per hour for every 1,000 watts. A 2,000 W heater running 3 hours a day uses about 180 kWh a month; oil-filled heaters with a thermostat cycle off, so they often average 50–70% of their rating.

Tip: All resistive heaters convert electricity to heat at nearly 100%; a heat pump or inverter AC in heat mode delivers 3–4× more heat per kWh.
Using this calculator outside India? Outside India? Pick your currency at the top of the page and enter the per-kWh rate printed on your bill. Typical residential averages: USA 18.3¢/kWh (EIA, July 2026; California 33.6¢, Texas 15.9¢), UK about £0.25/kWh, Germany about €0.38/kWh, UAE about AED 0.23–0.38/kWh, Canada about C$0.13–0.20/kWh and Australia about A$0.30–0.35/kWh. The kWh result is the same in every country; only the cost changes.

Use this before winter to estimate how much a room heater can add to the monthly bill. Heating appliances are usually high-load devices.
This is a preliminary planning estimate. For certified audits, use site measurement and nameplate readings.
FAQ
Which room heater uses the least electricity?
For the same heat output all resistive heaters use about the same energy. Savings come from a thermostat, a smaller heated space, and using an inverter AC with heat mode, which is 3–4 times more efficient.
Is this result exact?
It is an engineering estimate using user inputs. Exact result needs actual meter/nameplate data.
Can I use it for audit report?
Yes, as a preliminary calculation and supporting estimate.
Heating comfort tip
Seal air gaps, use thermostat control and heat only occupied rooms. This reduces runtime without reducing comfort much.
Accuracy note
The result is a planning estimate. Use nameplate wattage, measured runtime and current tariff for professional-level accuracy.
